Democracy and History

Reflecting a worldwide trend among democracies, Australian civic society has been eroded recently.

The Edelman Trust Barometer shows declining trust in our civic institutions and diminishing faith in democracy. Declining historical literacy is contributing to this erosion of trust in our democratic system.

We aim to rebuild Australians’ trust in their democratic systems. The CCH undertakes an annual Deakin Contemporary History Survey (DCHS), which measures Australians’ historical knowledge to build a comprehensive picture of historical literacy and identify areas where we need to increase knowledge and understanding of the past.
