Documents on Australian Foreign Policy
For over 50 years the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has produced the Documents on Australian Foreign Policy (DAFP) series. From its establishment in 1971, the objective of the program has been to illuminate “what Australian foreign policy was as a whole and how it came to be decided upon”. To date, 34 volumes have been published with 13 more scheduled for publication. It is, to put it bluntly, a mammoth and ongoing undertaking! Dr Jillian Beard and Dr Justine Greenwood joined the Historical Publications Section in 2022. In this talk, they will discuss how they came to work at DFAT (despite neither of them completing PhDs in foreign policy), give an overview of the Section and their respective projects (Jill on an Australia-India DAFP volume and Justine on a history of the Department), and answer any questions attendees may have about the transition from academia to the public service.
Dr Jillian Beard and Dr Justine Greenwood are historians working in the Historical Publications Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
