Pawan Singh

Pawan Singh is a visiting fellow at Deakin University and the Australia India Institute. From 2016-2019, he was a New Generation Network Scholar in Contemporary Histories at Deakin University and the Australia India Institute at the University of Melbourne. Pawan’s academic training is in interdisciplinary media studies with a focus on the study of minority identities, representation, privacy, and technology within a transnational context. His doctoral project examined the privacy contestations around the reform of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, a British-era law that was amended to decriminalize homosexuality in 2018 in India. His postdoctoral project extended this engagement to examine the nexus of biometric identity, individual dignity, and privacy contestations that shapes the experience of digital identity in India. He is currently working on a project on social media, fake news, and the circulation of historical, scientific, and political claims that drive the project of majoritarian politics in India.
