Helen Young is a Lecturer in the Writing, Literature and Culture Group who researches and teaches contemporary and historical popular cultures, especially speculative and historical genres. Racism and constructions of race, gender and medievalisms in texts, including fiction, television and videogames, and fandom are particular research interests. Helen is the author of Race and Popular Fantasy: Habits of Whiteness (2016) and Constructing “England” in the Fourteenth Century: A Postcolonial Interpretation of Middle English Romance (2010), series editor of Bloomsbury New Directions in Medieval Studies, and a member of the editorial board of the Bloomsbury series Perspectives on Fantasy, the Journal of Tolkien Studies and the Journal of Historical Fictions, and of the international advisory board for the Bloomsbury Medieval Studies digital resource.
